Mike is a native of California, but grew up mainly in Colorado (near Denver). Recently moved to Austin from Florida last year when his wife got a job with UT as an athletic trainer.
Mike played every sport possible as a kid, but soccer was always the favorite. A coaches son, he played in the good old AYSO in California and then various rec and select travel teams (none that anybody has heard of) in Colorado up through high school.
Mike continued to play soccer (and baseball) at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado, while earning a degree in Chemical Engineering way back in 1991.
He is new to the Westlake WYSA staff, but has been coaching youth soccer for about 6 years, mainly coaching his daughter Evan's teams (she now plays on the FC Westlake U12 girls select team), but has also coached a few U8-U9 and older boys teams in the past.
He has a USSF "E" License and hopes to get the next cert at some point in the near future.
We asked Mike a few questions and here is what he had to say:
Favorite Soccer Team?
MLS - Colorado Rapids, Europe - Napoli, and of course, the US national teams
What do you like to do outside of soccer?
Anything outdoors, trail runs, triathlons, recently into Spartan races
What other sports do you play?
Currently - see above, in the past - almost everything out there, but mainly baseball and basketball (the body just doesn't allow it anymore)
"If it's to be, it's up to me!"
Younger days - striker/winger, College - defense (I was bigger than most, but less skilled so they wanted me to be the enforcer)

What is your favorite food?
Pizza, in a tight one over Mexican
